Since we are at the foot of the mountains, the weather in this area is quite changing and unpredictable. During the day, the four seasons may be present, and sometimes the wind is part of the scenery.

Clothing

It is advisable to bring sport shoes or trekking boots. Clothing that may be superimposed, to put them on or take them off in layers according to the weather conditions. Thermal clothing -preferably made of synthetic material-. Waterproof jacket.

There is no banks in El Chaltén, just three ATM´s.

 

WALKS WITHIN LOS GLACIARES NATIONAL PARK

POICENOT CAMP and the lake LAGUNA DE LOS TRES

Three hours walk, with views to Río de las Vueltas Valley, and then to the mountain mass of the Fitz Roy Mount and to the glaciers, walking through the forest and open areas, and passing through lake Capri. Medium difficulty.
After crossing the White River, there is a one walk with a marked slope, medium to high difficulty, to the lake Laguna de los Tres, formed by the old moray of the glacier Glaciar de los Tres, coming from the Fitz Roy mount and its thaw. Marvelous view to the Fitz Roy mountain mass, the valley, the steppe and the Viedma Lake.

LAGUNA TORRE, DE AGOSTINI CAMP

From the town, it is a three-hour walk path, of low-medium difficulty, and little stretches with slope. After the first hour and a half, there is a viewpoint, a clearing with a small elevation that enables walkers to see the Fitz Roy River and the chain of the Torre peak. Descending from the viewpoint, there is another hour-and-a-half walk to the camp De Agostini, and then another 15 minutes walk through the moray, up the Torre Lake, to have a magnificent view of the glacier and the spiers.

LOMA DEL PLIEGUE TUMBADO

Four-hours walk of constant ascending through a diverse landscape, open and wooded areas. The top of Pliegue Tumbado is a wonderful panoramic point that enables to see the Fitz Roy mountain mass and the Cerro Torre mountain mass together with their valleys.

OTHER SHORT WALKS

Capri Lake, Chorrillo del Salto, Mirador de los Cóndores, Mirador de la Águilas, Bicisenda (Cyclepath).

LAGO DEL DESIERTO

Lago del Desierto, 38 km north, outside Los Glaciares National Park, in Lago del Desierto Provincial Reserve.
One-hour-and-a-half to two-hour journey, on a winding gravel path, through the Río de las Vueltas Valley, with amazing panoramic views. Tourists can make walks, sailing, and fishing activities.

PARQUE NACIONAL LOS GLACIARES

  • Do not leave trash: come back to the town with the trash on your bag.
  • Water purity: if you are camping, do not do any washing in the water streams.
  • Fires are not allowed within the park: you may only use heaters.
  • Beware with cigarettes: since they may cause a fire, put it out and store it with the trash.
  • Stay on the marked path.
  • Do not enter the National Park with domestic animals.
